Story Of Volleyball - The Tale Of An Amazing Sport
Today, it would be very strange if you do not know what is Volleyball or Beach Volleyball. Besides other great team sports like Basketball and Soccer, Volleyball is also considered to be one of the most famous sports in the world. As an extremely well-liked sport, volleyball has gone over so many changes all through history, they didn't even call it volleyball back in the day.
Holyoke, Massachusetts is where it all begins in 1895 when William Morgan, the YMCA Education Director invented this sport for the first time. However, if Basketball was never invented by his colleague in the Springfield YMCA, James Naismith 4 years earlier, probably Morgan will never had a motivation to create a new sport like Volleyball. Basketball is a fast paced sport that caught a lot of people's attention, it didn't take very long for this new sport to become very popular in the USA, but the problem is not everyone can play this game especially middle aged people that could not keep up with the fast paced of the game, and that's what motivated Morgan to create a new sport that can be played by people of all ages called "Mintonette".
So "Mintonette" is not really an attractive name for a sport, tell me about it, but this name was chosen for a reason, since this game was played on a square court and using a similar net to Badminton, Morgan actually thought that Mintonette was the perfect name for this sport. The rule of the game was actually quite simple, the players just need to volley the ball back and forth until one of the teams miss and the ball hits the ground. One of the earliest improvements of this sport is actually the name itself, the fact that this game is played by volleying the ball across the net finally became an idea to change the name into Volleyball, which sounds a bit more interesting and descriptive rather than Mintonette.
After this game gone through various improvements and modifications, Volleyball started to become more popular and enjoyable to be played, such as the length and width of the court including the height of the net were modified to make the game more challenging, the players in one team were limited to six, the final score, player rotation, and also the maximum three times touch. Various kinds of new technique followed the improvements of the volleyball rules, these new techniques including spiking, setting, and different styles of serve mostly developed by younger players and these great improvements even made Volleyball more popular amongst young people. The US missionary schools started to introduce Volleyball in Asia while the Us troops during the world war I brought this game to Europe, at this point volleyball has started to become a world wide game.
The next improvements can be said as a very critical point in Volleyball history which is the founding of several most important Volleyball organizations including The United States Volleyball Association in 1928 and also The FIVB - Federation Internationale de Volley-Ball in 1947, after it has an international federation 2 years later in Prague, Czechoslovakia the first Men's World Championship was held and in 1950s the Volleyball fans were entertained by the first International Competition in Russia. Volleyball is a very fun game and great to be played for relaxing with friends, and that's exactly what the people on the Coast of California do during their holiday at the beach, they played the game on the sand with a little modification on the rules to adapt to the environment, but this later on became the starting point of a whole new sport called Beach Volleyball, and California Coast will always be remembered as the birth place of this game in the beach volleyball history. These days we can see people playing Volleyball or Beach Volleyball even in the most remote areas all across the world, and after these games were finally became the official sport of the Summer Olympics they became even more popular.
